With the recent uptick in Covid-19 cases
and some States and Cities beginning to close once again, I thought I would start a series on fun ideas for things you can do to keep yourself entertained and help others stay entertained and engaged.
Download the game app, “Just Mowing”.
This is a little game that states when you download it, “It’s literally just mowing.” Brings me back to my youth! Not that I mowed very many lawns (grew up in the mountains), but it does remind me of King of the Hill, specifically Hank Hill and his treasured red mower.
It is quite amazing how stress-relieving this game is.
There are no punishments for not completing the yard in a certain way and you do not have to be afraid of breaking anything in the yard. Of course there’s not really anything in the way of real progression or challenge. However, they have thrown in options to collect new parts, accessories, wildlife and changing your mower, and the wind graphics especially makes it a very interesting experience. If you just need a mindless game to pass the time and ease your OCD, this is the perfect game for you.
To continue with the theme of apps and games for entertainment,
another game I suggest is “Avakin Life – 3D Virtual World”. I am not a huge fan of simulation games other than The Sims. Nevertheless, with this Covid-19 mess even I as an introvert have been craving contact with people other than my family. In this game, you are able to do a lot of different stuff — rent an apartment, get a quick job, buy a home, or shop for new clothes and accessories.
My favorite thing to do is get mischievous on the map.
I do things like go to the local café and bust out dance moves behind the counter. I also complain about the wait time when I have ordered something and the quality of the items I get. Sometimes you get funny reactions and you can get a kick out of it yourself, by pretending it is a real world in which you actually tasted the items given to you.
Another fun thing you can do in Avakin Life is splurge and get expensive items (without spending actual IRL money) that can help the other characters/players. It also simulates the feeling of not worrying about money, which I imagine could be a nice reprieve for many of us. I’ve not found a tipping option, so I usually buy people a gift as a tip.
You can also just be a total tool for no reason. Which can be mean if you take it too far, but I like to think I only scratch the surface. For instance I’ll pretend that the bartender is being rude and interrupting my conversation as you can see below.
It’s fun to be assertive and a bit antagonizing without having to worry about repercussions. I always apologize afterwards and give the person a gift with a thoughtful apology. The virtual equivalent of a Hallmark “sorry” card.
Get a Betta fish!
Bettas are simple pets that do not require much effort at all. Now many pet stores are selling slick, frameless tanks that look really modern and sophisticated. These come with a filter, which allows you more time in between water changes. In addition, all the colors! Bettas come in several color combinations that guarantee to brighten even your worst day! Even the all-black betta has a unique beauty that will brighten up your day.
Fish are great listeners and you’ll always have someone to talk to when you’re feeling alone, and there’s no better reason to keep going than having someone else to take care of.
Challenge your friends to a pose-off.
Alternatively, just do one on your own. What is this, you may be asking? Well, I’ll tell you. If you are going to challenge your friends, I would start by taking a picture of a celebrity you both know, or maybe a mutual friend you both admire. At any rate, send them a picture of whoever you are challenging them to pose as (or find a person you would like to pose as) and given them a deadline to try and look as close as they can to the person.
Now of course you can add various challenges to it.
I usually add the challenge of “You must only use props, clothing and accessories that are in your house or apartment right now”, (meaning they cannot just go out and buy the perfect Mr. Rogers cardigan). It’s so much fun to see how creative you can get! For example, once I used keys as a necklace to pose as one of the members in the band A R I Z O N A. This is especially fun if you have a partner in crime that can dress with you. I highly recommend it and will continue doing it myself!
Sorry this first list of COVID entertainment is video game heavy!
But I would kick myself if I didn’t mention what I believe is a highly under-rated PC game.
I know all the rage these days for nerds and geeks alike is DnD. For gamers I know, it’s Call of Duty, Overwatch and Animal Crossings right now. But here’s the thing. What if DnD is a little intimidating for the less imaginative folks? Or not completely conducive to introverts? Or maybe the dungeon master is a total tool? And for you gamers, perhaps those games are a bit too intense? Perhaps some of them are so chaotic that you find yourself lost in all the action and not getting a chance to slow down and appreciate the great graphics and cool designs of the characters.
Well look no further than HEROES OF THE STORM!
For you DnD folks, here is a game that has the rich history of the entire Blizzard franchise put together. That’s Diablo, WOW, WCIII, SC, SC2, Overwatch and its own characters from the storm. You have a wealth of choices of Druids, gnomes, vampires, dragons, assassins, bruisers, healers, paladins, witches, spell casters and more.
And particularly of interest to me,
they have rogues that actually cloak and depend on your skill vs whether the dungeon master likes you or not. There is something wonderful about being able to imagine your own world, but sometimes it’s nice to be able to see what you, the spells, swords, shields and heals would look like.
For you gamers,
this a free-to-play game and you can jump right into the thick of things. There are 5 different settings you can play, from AI to non-competitive to ultra-competitive. The game is also a lot less toxic than that of some other games, namely League of Legends and DOTA.
Because the game is a MOBA you will be paired,
in most cases with 4 other people, making games constantly different and challenging which always keeps things fresh and it’s very hard to get bored. There are 90+ characters to choose from! It is fast enough that it is a challenge, however, slow enough that you can actually enjoy the graphics — plus you might meet famous people. Hope to see you in the Storm!
